El Ladrillo (The Brick) - a key document behind the global Unipolar economic model

Published on 9 April 2026 at 20:29

El ladrillo was an economic programme composed by economists who studied at the Catholic University of Chile, later known as the Chicago boys, due to their training at and connections with the Chicago School of Economics. It contained a plan for structural overhaul of the Chilean economy, which was introduced under a repressive authoritarian rule, and remains controversial till this day. The document itself has had significant impact on the shape of the Chilean economy and also the global unipolar model that underpinned the era since the Cold War. Remodelling the Neoliberal model put in place by it is an important topic of current economic research.
